LaHouse is a display of high-performance building practices to create more sustainable, resilient and healthy homes in the gulf region. The research-based facility is located on LSU's Baton Rouge campus and displays home-building techniques and solutions for Louisiana's unique climate. LaHouse is open weekdays from 10 am to 4:30 p.m. for self-guided tours or can be toured completely virtually.

Ceiling surface-mount fluorescent light boxes

Compact fluorescent light boxes provide light to an entire room at a low operating cost. Additionally, they do not give off much radiant heat, reducing your HVAC system’s workload.

Fluorescent pendants, task lighting

Unlike diffused overhead lighting, task lighting focuses the light on a targeted working area which can be helpful if you’re preparing food in the kitchen. The focused light means you are not lighting an entire room if you only need to light a specific area. Pendant style bulbs also have no diffusing cover over the bulb, which can provide a much more concentrated light.

Under cabinet fluorescent and LED strips

Under cabinet lighting directly lights the counter space, making cooking prep easier and more well-lit. It is easily installed and can save money on energy bills by lighting one specific area rather than the entire kitchen.

South, east and north daylight (no west glass)

Having no western-facing windows prevents direct sunlight from entering the home in the hottest parts of the day. This reduces the load of your HVAC system and can be a long-term solution to lowering energy bills.

Of course, if your home is built with western-facing windows, there are still solutions to prevent overheating through the windows, like adding awnings, installing thick curtains, or adding cheaper solar films to reduce the heat that enters through the windows.
