PEX plumbing and fire sprinkler

LaHouse is a display of high-performance building practices to create more sustainable, resilient and healthy homes in the gulf region. The research-based facility is located on LSU's Baton Rouge campus and displays home-building techniques and solutions for Louisiana's unique climate. LaHouse is open weekdays from 10 am to 4:30 p.m. for self-guided tours or can be toured completely virtually.

Flexible PEX piping, few joints

Flexible PEX piping is an alternative to traditional copper and galvanized steel pipes that can be used in many parts of the home.

One benefit of using a PEX system is that the flexibility of the pipes allows for the pipes to run through the entire home without the need for multiple connection sites where leaks are prone to occur. This uninterrupted flow is known as “homerun” plumbing.

Unlike copper and galvanized steel, PEX pipes expand which eliminates the risk that they crack in freezing temperatures. PEX pipes also rarely need to be replaced as they do not corrode like metal piping options.

However, PEX cannot be used outdoors as the sun’s rays quickly breakdown the tubing and lead to cracks.

Integrated PEX fire sprinkler system

Unlike standalone fire sprinkler systems, this one uses PEX pipes and combines the cold-water plumbing and the fire sprinklers into one efficient system. This makes it easier to repair as both systems operate using the same parts and mechanism.

Fire detection sprinkler heads, low profile

A fire sprinkler head is a necessary safety measure in a home that can concentrate a water spray over a fire to prevent damage. The sprinklers in LaHouse are designed to not look industrial like traditional models while also keeping the home safe.
