The All-American Daylily Selection Council (AADSC) has been evaluating more than 50 performance characteristics of daylily varieties across the nation at a number of sites.
For 2006, winning daylily varieties are Buttered Popcorn and Persian Market. Buttered Popcorn won in the landscape category. It has vibrant golden flowers on 28- to 32-inch scapes. Foliage reaches 24 inches, and plants spread 30 inches. Persian Market won in the exhibition category. Flowers are salmon pink with a rose halo. Extended blooming periods are common for Persian Market.
The 2005 AADSC winners were Miss Mary Mary and Red Volunteer. Both have done well in LSU AgCenter trials, according to Owings. Other previous winners include Chorus Line, Lady Lucille, Plum Perfect, Frankly Scarlet, Bitsy, Black-eyed Stella, Judith, Leebea Orange Crush, Lullaby Baby and Starstruck.
The most popular daylilies are King Kahuna, Beautiful Edgings, Jolie Monde, Richfield Muriels Double, True Pink Beauty and Barbara Sheets, according to region 13 (Louisiana and Arkansas) members of the American Hemerocallis Society.
Many other daylily varieties are recommended for Louisiana, and most garden centers have a nice selection of daylilies in April and May each year, Owings says.
