Lafayette Fearn Swoope Jr. of Calcasieu Parish joined the Cooperative Extension Service in 1957 as an assistant county agent in Caldwell Parish. In 1958 he transferred to East Carroll Parish, then become a county agent in Calcasieu Parish from 1967 until his retirement in 1989. Swoope always saw the value in each child and sought ways to inspire them them to reach their potential through 4-H projects. He encouraged youth to develop resonsibility through the livestock project, served as the Southwest District Livestock Show manager for years and raised 4-H club lambs for 50 years. Swoope recognized the need for 4-H volunteers and formed one of the first parish advisory committees in Louisiana. For 45 years, the Calcasieu Parish advisory committee has conducted successful fundraisers through the World’s Finest Chocolate. Swoope still raises lambs, teaches families about raising them and serves as a volunteer leader in the livestock program.
