Joel Guidry began volunteering in the 4-H program when his children enrolled in the club in 1999. He remains active in 2012. His leadership roles include chairman of the 4-H Horse Advisory Task Force, Advisory Task Force swine representative and Acadiana District Livestock Show board member. Mr. Guidry was instrumental in developing the Lafayette 4-H Horse Advisory Board and is a graduate of the Master Horseman program. He has volunteered his time to coordinate horse camps for more than 40 youth, providing intensive, hands-on training. He has served as instructor for various disciplines of horsemanship and horse feeding and encouraged several high school students to assume leadership as peer trainers. As chairman of a task force, he helps raise $4,500 annually for awards and participation gifts for exhibitors. He coordinates a new member and parent orientation meeting, providing information and answering questions about the horse program. He recruits Master Horsemen to make home visits and to make personal contacts with new members. Mr. Guidry has served as a volunteer horse judging coach and has coordinated horse judging teams for 10 years. He has also assisted with horse quiz bowls and premier exhibitor contests. Joel Guidry, an outstanding 4-H leader, received the state Louisiana 4-H Horse Leader Award, and he volunteers more than 200 hours annually.
