For more than 70 years (1940-2012), Elsie Castille has been involved in the St. Martin Parish 4-H program as a member, 4-H agent, home economist, advisory board member, 4-H Foundation president, donor and volunteer. As a club member, she was involved in selling war bonds to assist in the Louisiana 4-H purchase of the Liberty Ship during World War II. She also planted a 4-H victory garden to supply fresh produce for her family during wartime. Ms. Castille has been a tremendous recruiter for 4-H volunteers because of her numerous contacts with more than 14 civic, community and church organizations. She has affected the lives of thousands of youth by contributing countless volunteer hours during 4-H events and activities. Ms. Castille has held numerous leadership roles as president of the Louisiana Home Economics Association, president of the Breaux Bridge and St. Martin VFC, president and district deputy of the Catholic Daughters of America. In 2006, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival Association inducted Ms. Elsie into their Hall of Fame. Elsie Castille also received the Extra Mile Volunteer Award for her dedicated service to seven Acadiana parishes.
