Sue Butler served as a 4-H leader at Vidalia Upper Elementary in Concordia Parish for 10 years (1988-98). When the Character Counts! program was initiated, she served as Central Area coordinator. In addition, Sue served on the LSU AgCenter’s Central Area Leadership Council for two years and on the parish advisory committee. Under her leadership, the club received the outstanding 4-H Club Award eight years. Each year, 95% of her club members presented demonstrations during demonstration month. Vidalia Upper club members were very involved in community service projects, including Arbor Day programs and 4-H Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Sue had a “big heart” and did everything needed to be done to provide members the opportunity to participate. She personally paid for supplies, sponsored scholarships to 4-H camps and provided transportation for students to participate. As a result of her innovative club meetings and community service projects, the club maintained a membership of 100 members. Many of the club members she directed have become productive citizens and parish leaders. She has received the Outstanding Elementary 4-H Leader Award (eight years), the United Way Community Service Award (three years) and the Rookie 4-H Leader Award. She has conducted leader training sessions at the Northeast Region 4-H Leader Forum and attended the Southern Region Leader Forum at Rock Eagle. She received the Edgar L. Gibson Memorial Award two years as a result of her 4-H superior organizational efforts and cooperative spirit.
