For 39 years, Johnny Broussard was involved in the 4-H program as a member and livestock leader. As a member, he exhibited the Grand Champion Shorthorn Bull at LSU and participated in the State 4-H Short Course Meat Identification and Poultry Judging contests. He served as Chairman of the parish 4-H Livestock Sale Committee for 28 years and helped organize the buyers luncheon, oversaw finances and solicited buyers. He was a key leader in organizing the first parish show and sale. Johnny assisted countless youth with their livestock projects by helping new 4-H members secure show animals and conducting clinics and workshops. He was instrumental in getting passage of a parishwide sales tax dedicated to the construction of the Vermilion Parish Extension Office and Exhibit building. Johnny was an active member of the Vermilion Cattlemen’s Association for 24 years, and under his leadership as president, membership tripled to 300 in one year, making the organization the largest in the state. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Brahman Breeders Association, judged for the Braford Breeders Association at Houston Livestock Show and was a member of the Houston Show Sale Committee. This Vermilion cattleman managed one of the largest commercial Brahman herds in the parish and was recognized as the 1988 Cattleman of the Year. He received the 4-H Alumni Award, and the 2009 Louisiana Cattle Festival was dedicated to his memory.
