BATON ROUGE – The LSU AgCenter will hold Hurricane Resistance Days at its LaHouse model home site June 14-17.
LaHouse, known officially as the Louisiana House Home and Landscape Resource Center, is designed as a showcase for safer, stronger and smarter building techniques. Among its purposes are educating homeowners, home buyers and the building industry on ways to create homes that are built for the hot-humid climate, are energy efficient, resist damage from hurricanes and termites and minimize adverse effects on the environment.
The facility will be open extended hours June 14-17 – with the Hurricane Resistance Days focusing on some of the storm-resistant building practices incorporated in LaHouse.
"The start of hurricane season always is a good time to reflect on how prepared you and your family may be," said Pat Skinner of the LSU AgCenter, who is a member of the LaHouse team. "If you’re planning to build or remodel a home, it’s also a great time to look at the things you can do to make it more resistant to hurricanes."
Located southwest of the central portion of the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, LaHouse is one of a variety of LSU AgCenter facilities across Louisiana.
Along with extended hours and guided tours of LaHouse during Hurricane Resistance Days, there will be short presentations on topics such as flood maps, flood insurance, storm-surge modeling, choosing and working with a contractor and making your home more flood, wind and water resistant.
The schedule for Hurricane Resistance Days is:
Thursday, June 14 – noon to 7 p.m.
Friday, June 15 – 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, June 16 – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday, June 17 – noon to 7 p.m.
LaHouse is located off Gourrier Lane southwest of the LSU’s main campus area. Driving directions, up-to-date program information, a schedule of presentations and a list of participating agencies and vendors are available at http://www.buildsaferstrongersmarter.org/.
Hurricane Resistance Days at LaHouse is part of the LSU AgCenter’s Build Safer, Stronger, Smarter initiative. LaHouse is built through a public-private partnership.
Representatives of FEMA mitigation, mapping and insurance programs; the Capital Region Builders Association; and donors of high-performance building systems and materials used in LaHouse construction will be on site for the Hurricane Resistance Days events.
