ABBEVILLE -- The LSU AgCenter’s Disaster Recovery and Mitigation Unit joins the Vermilion Parish Police Jury to bring a free Community Rebuilding and Flood Protection Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 28 at Abbeville High School.
This expo is designed to teach homeowners how to protect their homes from damages caused by hurricanes and other weather-related occurrences. Lucile Guidry, an LSU AgCenter extension associate, said the purpose of the event is to provide information regarding the many options available for hurricane protection including retrofitting current structures, as well as non-structural flood protection methods.
“We will have several specialists and researchers on hand to talk with homeowners about what they can do to better protect their homes,” Guidry said. “We also will have information available that homeowners can take with them, and we will have models and other exhibits they can look at to see how retrofitting techniques, such as installing hurricane straps, are done.”
Topics and exhibits planned for the expo include:
-- Surge modeling showing “what if” scenarios for different landfall locations in the area.
-- Low-cost ways to make a home safer.
-- Different methods of house raising (elevating).
-- Funding sources for elevating (raising) homes.
-- Understanding flood and wind maps and elevation certificates (sometimes referred to as “flood certificates”).
-- Construction permit concerns.
-- A computer bank for residents to find their homes on the floodplain based on Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and the Louisiana Mapping Project (LaMP).
-- Coastal protection and restoration.
-- Non-structural flood protection including elevating structures, using ring levees, coffer dams and flood barriers.
Other speakers include Paul Rainwater, chief executive officer of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, who will talk about the state's funding program for elevating structures.
Abbeville High School is located at 1305 Wildcat Dr., in Abbeville. For information on the expo, call the LSU AgCenter Vermilion Parish Office at (337) 898-4335, or go to www.lsuagcenter.com/rebuilding/expo.
