Stormwater Academy

Ron Sheffield, Hendrick, Rodney D.

The LSU AgCenter conducted a two-day Urban Stormwater BMP Academy on June 12 and 13, 2006. This workshop concentrated on permanent stormwater BMPs for construction, post-construction and retrofitting stormwater treatment and detention areas. Day 1 reviewed the regulations and covered the principals of soil erosion and its prevention and control, followed by discussions of constructed wetlands, water gardens and other bio-retention measures. Presentations were made on suitable plants for wetlands, and the program concluded with a presentation on permeable pavements and a local case study.

With the deadline approaching  for municipalities covered under Phase II stormwater regulations to have their ordinances in place on construction and post-construction stormwater, this workshop was designed to give municipal officials, engineers, landscape architects and architects up-to-date information on some of the most-common permanent stormwater  BMPs.

Speakers included: Darlene Bernard, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality; Ed Giering, Natural Resource Conservation Service; Dr. Bill Hunt, North Carolina State University;  Dana Nunez Brown, ASLA, Brown + Dana; Dan Gill, LSU AgCenter; Jon Hathaway, North Carolina State University. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Rod Hendrick, LSU AgCenter.

Most of the PowerPoint presentations and handouts from this workshop are posted to this Web site.
