Panicle Rice Mite - Steneotarsonemus spinki Smiley
Panicle rice mites feed on the plant material on the inside of the flag leaf sheath. Injury can be observed on interior sheaths when the outer sheath is removed. Once a new leaf begins to develop, a female panicle rice mite will move to the new leaf heath, produce male off spring and establish a new feeding lesion. This continues until the panicle rice mite reaches the leaf nearest the stem.
