Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)
Larvae feed on the leaves of young rice plants. When large numbers of armyworm are present, seedlings can be pruned to the ground, resulting in severe stand loss. Larvae vary from light green to brown to black but have distinctive white stripes along the side and back of the body. Larvae feed for 2 to 3 weeks, developing through four instars. Late instars are about one inch long and have a distinctive inverted “Y” on the head.
