LaHouse is a display of high-performance building practices to create more sustainable, resilient and healthy homes in the gulf region. The research-based facility is located on LSU's Baton Rouge campus and displays home-building techniques and solutions for Louisiana's unique climate. LaHouse is open weekdays from 10 am to 4:30 p.m. for self-guided tours or can be toured completely virtually.

Unlike traditional bathroom bathroom counters, there is enough space to pull your wheelchair beneath the counter to reach all parts of the countertop.

Varied sink/counter heights

Unlike traditional bathroom bathroom counters, there is enough space to pull your wheelchair beneath the counter to reach all parts of the countertop.

The varied heights of the mirrors allows for individuals in a wheelchair to still have access to a mirror.

Engineered quartz counters

Quartz countertops are one of the best options for the bathroom as they are non-porous and extremely easy to clean. Because they are made of stone and binding polymers, quartz countertops are incredibly durable and not prone to chipping or cracking.

Unlike countertops made of natural stone or granite, quartz does not require any specialized sealant or cleaning solution, which makes for easy maintenance.

Quartz comes in a variety of patterns and colors to fit any aesthetic. Since they are manufactured rather than naturally occurring, the pattern or color will be consistent throughout the counter, unlike natural stone, which has many color and texture deviations.

Water-efficient, single lever faucets

Single lever showers are a better option than two handled faucets for many reasons:

Because a single-lever does not have the option to only turn on the hot water, users are less likely to burn themselves in the shower. The single lever ensures cold water is always mixed in to prevent scalding and burning.

Two handled faucets can be difficult to operate for those with limited hand mobility or poor grip. The single lever does not require a strong grip to adjust and can be done with only one hand.

Faucets with two handles to adjust temperatures are also harder to repair because two separate stems can be damaged and need replacing. Single lever options only have one stem, so there is only one cartridge that will need to be fixed or replaced.

Plumbing in interior walls

It’s best to have plumbing in the interior walls of the home. While plumbing can technically go through exterior walls as long as it is well insulated, it puts a home more at risk for damage in the event of extreme weather, especially extreme cold when pipes are prone to burst. Additionally, it will take longer for water to reach an ideal temperature if the pipes are not properly insulated in an exterior wall, as very hot or cold outdoor air make it harder for water to reach an ideal temperature.
