The varying countertop heights make the kitchen more accessible to those who use wheelchairs. The lower counter gives anyone who uses a wheelchair adequate workspace and access to a sink.
All rooms in LaHouse have adequate wheelchair turning clearance. Ensuring adequate turning clearance means there’s enough room for a wheelchair to make a complete revolution and ensures all parts of a home are accessible.
Having cabinet storage lower to the ground makes the home more accessible to people who use wheelchairs as it does not require long reach or assistance to access cabinets.
When building your home, it’s important to ensure all doors and entryways are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair or walker. Additionally, having smooth and low thresholds makes the home safer for people that use these assistive devices as uneven surfaces like thresholds can create risk and instability.
If trying to make an existing home more wheelchair friendly, consider installing small doorway ramps that eliminate a bump at the threshold of your home.
