LaHouse is a display of high-performance building practices to create more sustainable, resilient and healthy homes in the gulf region. The research-based facility is located on LSU's Baton Rouge campus and displays home-building techniques and solutions for Louisiana's unique climate. LaHouse is open weekdays from 10 am to 4:30 p.m. for self-guided tours or can be toured completely virtually.

Standing seam metal, no exposed fasteners

Standing seam metal roofs are very resilient and can last for 40-70 years. Metal roofs can withstand harsh climates and winds up to 140 mph in addition to being fire-resistant.

Metal roofs can either have concealed or exposed attachments. Compared to an exposed system, concealed-clip attachments prevent leaks and prevent exposure to the elements which can damage them over time.

Fastened for 130 mph wind, fiber cement soffit

Any material used to cover the underside of your roof overhang is a soffit. The soffit covers the underside of your roof, allowing outside air to flow in which helps ventilate your attic.

Traditional wooden soffits tend to rot if they are not taken care of. Fiber cement soffits provide the same function as traditional soffits but are water, insect, and rot resistant.

A building’s soffit is a common weak point in the building envelope during a high wind event. When soffits blow off, the wind blows rain into the building causing damage. Fastening the soffit panels instead of friction fitting them is recommended to avoid this.

“Cool color” heat reflective paint

Heat reflective paint improves the insulation of the building by reflecting solar radiation which prevents excess heating inside.

Ridge vent + continuous soffit vent

Continuous soffit venting is crucial to keep your attic dry and prevent moisture issues throughout the rest of the home.

Tear resistant synthetic underlayment

The underlayment is made with an asphalt saturated base mat and fortified with a fiberglass mixture. This combination of materials makes this underlayment extremely water and tear resistant.
