Tankless water heaters tap right into the waterline, heating cold water as needed through an electric element or gas burner without a storage tank. Rather running water and waiting for it to be a comfortable temperature, tankless water heaters provide instant hot water, which reduces the overall water consumption of a home.

While the initial cost and installation of a tankless water heater is more expensive than other options, the longer lifespan and lower water and electricity bills make it worth considering.

Combo space heating via heat exchanger

Combination water and space heating systems cost more than a separate water heater, furnace, or boiler but may provide lower utility costs.

Usually, a combination water and space heating system is designed for use in a new construction home, but some retrofit units can work with an existing water heater.

Exterior mount, no indoor combustion

Tankless water heaters are typically small and have a low profile.

Tankless water heaters can be installed outside if they are built to withstand the elements.
