LaHouse is a display of high-performance building practices to create more sustainable, resilient and healthy homes in the gulf region. The research-based facility is located on LSU's Baton Rouge campus and displays home-building techniques and solutions for Louisiana's unique climate. LaHouse is open weekdays from 10 am to 4:30 p.m. for self-guided tours or can be toured completely virtually.

Using 2x6 borate studs will result in a better insulated home. In 2x6 frame construction, there is more space between the interior and exterior walls, which allows for more insulation space.

Fewer studs are required for a building with 24” over 16” spacing.

Strong, sealed house wrap

A house wrap prevents moisture, inhibits mold, and prevents drafts. Additionally, it can act as a wind barrier depending on how the house wrap is hung. House wraps also prevent zones of the home that are hotter or colder than others by adding an additional layer of insulation.

While house wrap will be an additional construction cost, energy savings and moisture prevention make it a worthy investment for long-term savings.

Adhesive windowsill & corner flashing

A windowsill is a flat piece used at the bottom of a window frame. Windowsills keep water out of the window and the inside dry.

Additionally, there are a variety of purposes and functionalities, including structural integrity, improved energy efficiency, water protection, and decorative space.

Arguably the most critical part of a window installation is the corner flashing. This will collect any water that leaks in around the jamb itself and allow the water to drain out, either due to an installation problem or damage that occurs to the window.

Pre-finished fiber cement siding, soffit, trim

Fiber cement products are water and fire-resistant, insect-resistant, and never rot.

Fiber cement siding requires minimal washing, which makes it easy and inexpensive to maintain. Fiber cement siding is a more sustainable material because no toxins are created in its manufacturing process, and it lasts much longer than vinyl and aluminum siding.
