If you need to take inventoried equipment home in order to work remotely, proper inventory management procedures must be followed. You will need to clear these requests through your supervisor and/or unit head and complete the Request for Off-Campus/Home Storage of Equipment form.
Broadband Internet access for your home or remote work-space is highly encouraged. There are a number of different ways you can get broadband Internet access at home including:
*If you set up a wireless router for your home, you will need to make sure it is secure. Here are some steps you can take to secure your home network:
Change the default administrator password for your Internet router. The administrator password is NOT the same as the password to connect a device (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) to your router. The admin account is what allows you to configure the settings for your wireless network. The problem is many Internet routers or wireless access points are shipped with a default admin login and password that are well known and often posted on the Internet. As such, be sure to change the admin password to a strong, unique password that only you know (minimum 12 characters, mixture of upper case, lower case, numeric and special characters).
When configuring your wireless router, the best option is to use the security mechanism called WPA2. By enabling this, a password is required to connect to your home network. Once connected, online activities are encrypted. Be sure you do not use older, outdated security methods, such as WEP, or no security at all, which is an open network. Open networks allow anyone to connect to your wireless network without any authentication.
