Work Location: This position will be primarily located at the Dean Lee Research and Extension Center in Alexandria, Louisiana. The position will also be expected to coordinate sugarcane and soybean research efforts at the Iberia Research Station located in Jeanerette, Louisiana.
Job Description: This is a full-time 12 month, tenure-track position with an 75% research and 25% extension appointment focused on sugarcane and soybean crop production systems in central Louisiana and the Teche Sugarcane growing region in South Louisiana. The successful candidate must interact with commodity and agricultural industry partners to identify, develop and implement critical research projects. Collaboration with research and extension faculty within Louisiana, as well as with national experts on issues of shared interest and importance will be encouraged. Formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives will be expected. Results of research should be published in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific/technical publications. Extramural funding to support the activities of the position should be solicited from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program focused on sugarcane and soybean production at the Dean Lee Research and Extension Center as well as develop and coordinate research at the Iberia Research Station. Including in these efforts, he/she will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty from the LSU AgCenter’s Sugarcane Research Station and the USDA’s ARS Research Station in Houma, Louisiana in addressing industry needs and coordinating sugarcane variety testing. Additionally, h/she will conduct research to support and enhance soybean production systems in Louisiana. Extension and outreach responsibilities will also include central and south Louisiana, and will focus on sugarcane and soybean production. He/she will be responsible for working with advisory committees to identify clientele needs, developing research programs that respond to those needs, and assessing program impact. He/she will disseminate LSU AgCenter recommendations and provide current content to commodity web pages on the AgCenter web site. Technology transfer and outreach to stakeholders must be accomplished through web-based content, social media, agricultural trade magazines and traditional extension methods (newsletters, blogs, oral delivery and formal extension publications). Additional duties include participation in professional and technical meetings and other outreach as is necessary to inform producers, industry personnel, and other research scientists of project activities and findings. This faculty member will report to the Central Regional Director of the LSU AgCenter.
Qualification Requirements: A Ph.D. in agronomy, soil science, or other closely related agricultural field of study is required. Documented training in field crops research and agronomic production practices is critical to the success of the position. Applicants should have demonstrated effective oral, written and electronic communication skills necessary for presentations to a variety of audiences. Evidence of successful grantsmanship, research activity, and stakeholder interaction will be important considerations. The ability to multi-task and work in a team environment with research and extension faculty representing other disciplines is critical.
