(Field Corn/Cotton/Grain Sorghum Specialist)
Rank and Nature of Position: This is a 12-month tenure track appointment located at the Tom H. Scott Research and Extension Center in Winnsboro, LA . The position is 85% extension (statewide field corn, cotton, and grain sorghum specialist) and 15% research (including statewide coordinator of the cotton, field corn, and grain sorghum variety testing and core block programs). The individual will be a faculty member of the LSU AgCenter Northeast Region. Opportunities for research and extension activities exist at three research stations in the Northeast Region and at the research station in the Central Region. This position will be the primary statewide contact for LSU AgCenter field corn, cotton, and grain sorghum extension and outreach programs.

Job Description:The successful candidate will have statewide extension responsibilities for developing, coordinating and conducting education programs for field corn, cotton, and grain sorghum production based on Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Louisiana Agriculture. He/she will work collaboratively with other LSU AgCenter faculty, private crop consultants, commodity groups, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and Louisiana Farm Bureau to identify and address emerging issues and problems associated with these crops. He/she will prepare extension publications in formats suitable for both hard copy and electronic dissemination, including commodity-based newsletters and web sites. The specialist will work collaboratively with other faculty to provide in-service training opportunities for extension agents across the state. He/she also will be actively involved in planning and delivering a variety of educational programs at workshops, field days and meetings/conferences. The incumbent will be responsible for working with other LSU AgCenter faculty/staff to annually update the LSU AgCenter on-farm corn hybrid, cotton, and grain sorghum variety extension publications and disseminate the information to clientele in a timely fashion. The successful candidate will be required to develop a plan of work for extension programming, implement a system of program evaluation, and report accomplishments according to LSU AgCenter guidelines. He/she will also be required to provide leadership/coordination to the statewide field corn, cotton and grain sorghum variety testing program, and publish the findings in appropriate outlets. Extramural funding to support the research and extension program must be secured from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries. The successful candidate will work closely with the regional director as well as other research and extension faculty to ensure that his/her research and extension programs support the mission of the LSU AgCenter. The candidate will also participate in graduate student education. Participation in regional, departmental and campus committees is expected as a faculty member in a land grant university. Continued education development through association with professional societies and attendance at national and international conferences will be required. The position currently has a full-time grant-funded research associate position to support the project efforts. The successful candidate will be expected to manage personnel and equipment resources. Farm crew activities are directed by the Research Station Coordinators and the successful candidate will be expected to coordinate activities with these individuals.
Qualification Requirements: Ph.D. in Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil Science or other appropriate agriculture-related field is required. Experience in production of agronomic crops, pest management, soil fertility and plant nutrition is highly desirable. Good interpersonal skills and leadership abilities are required for working effectively with diverse professional and lay audiences and cooperators. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with diverse audiences including scientific peers, clientele, and agribusiness representatives. Development of scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles and educational curricula/programs for appropriate publications/journals and other outlets, including LSU AgCenter numbered publications, is required for professional development.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
