Work Location: The Louisiana State University Agricultural Center’s School of Nutrition and Food Sciences (NFS) seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position in food microbiology and food safety at the level of assistant or associate professor. This is a 12-month joint appointment with primary responsibilities in Research (70% - LSU Agricultural Center) and Teaching (30% - LSU College of Agriculture).

General Information: NFS consists of 23 faculty members, 10 research, extension, and teaching associates: and 5 supporting staff members. There are 234 undergraduate students and 59 graduate students. The School has a BS degree program in Nutrition and Food Sciences with areas of concentration in Dietetics (ACEND accredited); Nutritional Sciences / Premed; Nutrition, Health, and Society; and Food Science and Technology / Premed. The MS and PhD degree programs in Nutrition and Foods Sciences offers areas of concentration in Food and Bioprocessing Systems, Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition, and Molecular Nutrition.

The LSU AgCenter and LSU maintains state-of-the-art research facilities and faculty have access to extensive infrastructure and collaborative opportunities within the School and across campus. In addition, both basic and clinical cores at Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) are available for the successful candidate’s research program. This includes the PBRC Genomics Core that operates an Illumina MiSeq sequencing instrument capable of performing 16S metagenomics analyses of microbial community compositions. Bioinformatics support is also available as is state of the art clinical research facilities and metabolic kitchen.

Position Description: NFS is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to develop teaching and research in the area of food microbiology and food safety. This position will provide leadership and scholarship in food microbiology and food safety. The successful candidate will actively participate in the teaching, research, and service activities in NFS including participation in global programs and will have the opportunity to work on collaborative projects with a wide variety of groups including the Food Incubator and other departments. Areas of particular interest for future research include detection, transmission, and ecology of food-borne pathogens and spoilage organisms, and techniques for their control. The individual in this position will be expected to achieve a record of scholarly activity as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, successful extramural funding, success in teaching university-level courses and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will manage the food microbiology laboratory, which provides food safety-related services to the food industry.

Qualification Requirements: Ph.D. in nutrition, food science, food microbiology, or closely related fields with expertise in food microbiology and food safety. Post-doctoral experience preferred with a scholarly emphasis in food microbiology and safety. Evidence of research excellence, ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research, and ability to develop and effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses is desirable.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options.
