(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position.Continuation will be dependent on funding, job performance, and continued need for the appointment.)
Work Location: Sugar Research Station, LSU Ag Center, St. Gabriel, Louisiana.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibility in this position will be with the offstation/infield and outfield nursery stages of the LSU AgCenter Sugarcane Variety Development program. Activities in this position include planting, harvesting, laboratory analysis of harvested samples and, data acquisition. The person is this position is also expected to actively participate in variety advancement activities and preparing an annual report of these research activities. The applicant is also expected from time to time to assist the breeder with sugarcane breeding activities including but not limited to photoperiod and crossing, early stage clonal selection, and other related activities which are conducted industry-wide in cooperation with personnel from the USDA-ARS and the American Sugar Cane League. The applicant will interact with the Sugar Research Station farm manager and sugarcane growers to coordinate cultural practices, planting, and harvesting schedules. The applicant is also expected to assist with other cooperators of the LSU AgCenter’s sugarcane breeding program, such as the plant pathologists, entomologists, agronomists and weed scientists.
Qualification Requirements: B.S. or M.S. in agriculture, horticulture, plant science or related field. Other degree areas may be acceptable especially if combined with sugarcane or other farming experience.
