4-H Summer Camp Nurse

DESCRIPTION: The Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center seeks a certified nurse to manage the Infirmary during 4-H Summer Camp. Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center serves as a 4-H summer camp to children 9-12 years of age, and currently in the 4th-6th grade. During any given week, our facility can camp between 400-450 youth.

EXPECTATIONS: Camp Nurses are expected to provide basic medical care, dispense over the counter (OTC) and prescription medication, and provide basic triage and simple diagnosis of injuries/medical problems. Nurses must document all medical care information. The Camp Nurse reports directly to the Camp Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assume responsibility and authority for decision making regarding medical emergencies
  • Dispense medications as prescribed by camper’s physician and as detailed on health form
  • Maintain accurate logs of medication dispensing and treatment of injuries/illnesses, including documented incident reports as warranted
  • Responsible for medical supplies, logs, and medications stored and locked inside a cabinet in the Infirmary.
  • Review camper health forms before camp weeks as needed
  • Conduct onsite training for staff as needed
  • Meet with Camp Director daily to review any camper issues and specific areas of need that may arise
  • Administer over the counter medications as directed
  • Assess campers and staff who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed.
  • Assist is stabilizing campers and staff requiring transportation to the medical facility
  • Documentation of all injuries and care rendered. Nurses must document all over the counter medicines, first aid treatment, and communication with 4-H agents and parents regarding camper health
  • All other duties assigned by the Camp Director
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies
  • Keep infirmary clean and organized
  • Ability to communicate and work with campers, staff and 4-H agents of various skill levels and provide necessary instruction regarding medical care.

  • Excellent bedside manner, friendly and personable
  • Strong assessment abilities
  • Prior experience with children

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies
  • Keep infirmary clean and organized
  • Ability to communicate and work with campers, staff and 4-H agents of various skill levels and provide necessary instruction regarding medical care.

QUALIFICATIONS: Current Registered Nurse License or LPN License. One-year prior professional nursing experience preferred, preferably with youth. Must complete employee background screening process and be approved by the LSU AgCenter Human Resource Management Unit.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Camp Nurses run and manage the Infirmary.Camp Nurses have private quarters in the dormitory across the hall from the Infirmary. This room has a private shower, A/C, and wireless internet. Meals and snacks are also available.

HOURS/SALARY: The Infirmary is open Monday 10 a.m.–Friday 9 a.m. Grant Walker offers day/night shift or shift rotations. Salary will commensurate with experience.

DATES AVAILABLE:Camp starts on May 20, 2019, and ends July 31, 2019. The infirmary is managed all week, 24 hours/day.Camp is not in session the week of June 17-21, 2019.There will be a designated training period for nurses. Date and times for the training will be discussed upon hire.
