Research Associate/ Instructor


WORK LOCATION: Agricultural Chemistry Department, LSU Ag Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The associate performs laboratory tests to determine microbiological, chemical and physical characteristics of samples including, but not limited to food, feed, fertilizer, lime, plant tissue, soil, water and pesticides.Associate will be required to adhere to and support the laboratory’s Quality Management System based upon ISO 17025 standards and to follow standard operating procedures required for job duties.Research associate ensures that their duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality in a timely manner. Duties and Responsibilities: Perform microbiological and chemical analytical tests based on standards and procedures as assigned by the Supervisor, Laboratory Quality Manager and Director. Manage the microbiologicaland toxin laboratory’s Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) cooperative agreement.This includes quarterly and annual reports and leading the funded research and surveillance work.Assist and perform setup and operation of laboratory equipment. Calibrate laboratory instruments as needed to ensure that analysis is accurate according to the Quality Management system. Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment and supplies. Prepare microbial media and chemical solutions according to standard formulas. Record test results on standardized forms. Understand and complete laboratory raw data sheets and make accurate entries into LIMS database. Ability to read and comprehend all analytical methods, including safety standards, other well-defined analytical standards and procedures used in the laboratory. Exercise procedural, safety and quality requirements specified in LSU Agricultural Chemistry policies. All other duties assigned by management.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor of Science in microbiology or a closely related field.Master’s degree preferred.Experience in food safety or food microbiology preferred.
