(Grow Louisiana Beginning Farmer Training Program Director)

(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position through August 31, 2021. Funding must be available for any continuation of appointment.)

WORK LOCATION: School of Plant, Environmental & Soil Sciences, LSU Ag Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Extension Associate, as Program Director, is responsible for managing the Grow Louisiana Beginning Farmer Training Program. The Program Director will work directly with Project Management Team and Taskforce Committee and will report to the Project PI.The Program Director will work closely with the program partners to design content and curricula, deliver the wide array of educational programming, and provide support for the Louisiana CRAFT (a state network of farmers) which will be created for networking and mentoring. Overall duties are to plan and manage the creation, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the beginning farmer training program.In addition, to facilitate programmatic evaluations and follow-up, including collecting feedback, administering and collating surveys, sending follow-up correspondence and surveys to program participants, and program reporting.The position will assist with the training and provide support to program partners as needed.Coordination and collaboration with other LSU AgCenter Extension faculty as well as Southern University staff will be essential. This position will require overnight travel and work on evenings and weekends occasionally. This individual must have excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including word processing, publishing, spreadsheet software as well as presentation software such as PowerPoint. This individual must be willing to maintain professional competence as a staff member of the LSU AgCenter. The associate is expected to perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor(s).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a subject area appropriate to the position responsibilities; at least three years of professional experience; experience working with the public and evidence of effective public relations skills; excellent computer skills (Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet); experience and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and public speaking; seasoned problem-solving skills; ability to work with diverse audiences; ability and willingness to take initiative and to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously, have flexibility and adaptability to work in a continuously changing environment; be self-motivated and assertive yet diplomatic; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to quickly assess situations, think broadly and logically, make appropriate decisions that account for broad consequences; and a valid Louisiana’s Driver’s License. Ability to work with and through others is essential, as is the ability to function with minimum supervision. Applicants with Master’s or Ph.D. degree in the agriculture, business, or education fields are encouraged to apply. Preferred Qualifications: Professional experience with sustainable agriculture, local food systems, horticulture, and/or agriculture education is preferable.Prior experience in managing project budgets and reporting, building coalitions and partnerships, and supervising and mentoring staff and clientele.Previous Extension or farm operations experience and training and/or classroom facilitation a plus.
