Assistant/Associate Professor

(Consumer Horticulture Specialist)

WORK LOCATION: This is an Assistant or Associate Professor tenure-track position in the School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA. The position is 80% extension (30% in agricultural communications) and 20% teaching.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized extension and teaching program in horticulture. Extension efforts should address issues of importance regarding the cultivation of plants (ornamental, fruit, and vegetable) in gardens and landscapes for the benefit of individuals, communities and the environment. This position will require the development of written extension materials for consumers; development and/or management of consumer horticulture materials for video, radio and various social media platforms; and the development of materials and organized events for training and assisting statewide extension personnel. This individual will coordinate the “Get It Growing™” horticulture marketing and educational campaign which includes a weekly television segment, press release, radio segment and annual calendar. The candidate should possess the interpersonal skills that allow him/her to effectively educate the general public through various media. The successful candidate will be expected to routinely interact with parish extension agents and agricultural communication personnel, and work cooperatively across allied disciplines. The teaching responsibilities with this position include teaching plant propagation at the undergraduate level and advise graduate students. The successful candidate will be responsible for obtaining extramural funding to support their extension program. Extension activities and applied research results are expected to be published in peer-reviewed journals and trade publications as well as presented at state, regional, and national meetings.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in horticulture or a closely related discipline. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Experience in television interviews or segments, writing press releases and radio production, generation of extramural funding, and teaching experience is desirable.
