What Happened This Summer

Lake Providence Levee Fest2022 Lake Providence Levee Fest

The 4-H Junior Leader Club volunteered at the Lake Providence Levee Fest on May 14th in downtown Lake Providence. Thank you to Teen Leaders Kirsten Moore, Kayleigh Moore, Elisha McKrakin, Madison Martin, Laila Lucas, LaValonie Dukes, Kazarea Sanders, Ulaila Martin, J’Nya Powell, and Da’Niyah Newell for volunteering at this event.

4-H Summer CampSummer Camp 2022

Camping is one of the most valuable experiences a child can have. It’s a learning experience that can help children appreciate the outdoors, live together as a group, get along with others, and appreciate different interests and backgrounds. 4-H Summer Camp for East Carroll Parish was held from May 23rd-26th at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, Louisiana. A special thank you to adults and youth for volunteering during their summer break: KarVan Powell, Jr., Westley Bowman, Jr., Tretavious Hill, and Elisha Lucas.

4-H University4-H University 2022

This past summer, seven East Carroll Parish 4-H’ers took part in 4-H U held at Louisiana State University. Congratulations to 4-H U delegates: Terry Douglas, Laila Lucas, Da’Niyah Newell, J’Nya Powell, Milton Ross, Taylor Walker, and Jaheem Williams.

Leadership and Health Retreat2022 Leader Health Retreat

The 4-H Junior Leaders and the Healthy Young People Empowerment (HYPE) teen leaders participated in a Teen Leadership and Health Retreat. Youth from East Carroll, Morehouse, and Tensas parishes spent the day at Chemin-A-Haut State Park in Morehouse Parish. The youth participated in educational break-out sessions, learned new skills, completed a community service project, and met new friends.

2022 State 4-H Fashion Board2022 We Lead Conference

Laila Lucas is a member of the 2022 State 4-H Fashion Board. As a member of the board, she will be presenting fashion workshops to youth in East Carroll and around the state along with coordinating the 2023 State Fashion Camp. Congratulations, Laila for representing East Carroll Parish!

4-H Marsh Maneuvers2022 Marsh Maneuvers

East Carroll Parish campers had the opportunity to participate in Marsh Maneuvers in Intracoastal City, Louisiana. Marsh Maneuvers is a unique hands-on experience that allows youth to learn about the environment and Louisiana’s natural resources while making new friends and having fun! East Carroll delegates were Terry Douglas and Milton Ross.

Service-learning Focus

Mental Health Awareness is our state and parish service-learning focus for the 2022-2023 year. Opportunities will be offered for you to participate in our statewide focus. Let’s get busy making a difference in our community and state.


Northeast 4-H Regional Leadership Board

Regional Leadership Board allows teens from the Northeast region to work together using a youth-voice-led program to gain leadership and provide community service.

Applicants must be 14 years or older. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Help organize the regional 4-H service project.
  • Promote 4-H at Ag Alley, Ag Expo, Ag Adventures, Challenge Camp, 4-H Day at the Capitol, and more.
  • Learn ways to take your leadership skills back to your parish and local clubs and community.
  • Earn up to a $75 scholarship toward conference fees for Junior Leadership Conference, 4-H U, or state board fees.

Ask your leader or Mrs. Powell for an application. Applications are due September 13th.


National 4-H Week

Help celebrate our 4-H program during National 4-H Week October 2-8, 2022. Be creative, be innovative, and do what you can to make a positive difference in your school and community. Show your pride by sponsoring school activities throughout the week and help get others to share the enthusiasm.


Northeast 4-H Volunteer Leader Forum

The 2022 NELA 4-H Volunteer Leader Forum will be held on October 18th from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the River of Life Church in Winnsboro. The forum is open to both youth and adults. Lunch will be provided. Contact Mrs. Powell to register by Tuesday, October 4th.


Breast Cancer Awareness Poster Contest

Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

  • Draw using colored pencils or crayons or use pictures from magazines or printed images (no copyright material can be used).
  • Write your name, address, school, grade, and teacher on the back of the poster.
  • Posters are due at the 4-H office on Monday, October 17th.
  • Any size poster is acceptable.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

  • Select the perfect pumpkin for your design.
  • Paint, carve, or decorate the pumpkin at home.
  • Fill out the entry tag, cut it out, and attach it to your pumpkin with tape or string.
  • Bring your pumpkin to the 4-H office by 4 p.m. on Monday, October 24th. None will be accepted after 4 p.m.

4-H Membership Drive

4-H is a positive youth development organization delivered through the LSU AgCenter. In 4-H, members complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture, and citizenship in a positive environment where they can receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Join 4-H today! The club with the highest percentage of enrollment will win an ice cream or cupcake party. The deadline to register is October 31st.


Shooting Sports Camp

The Shooting Sports Camp will be held December 16-18 in Pollock at Grant Walker Educational Facility. The camp is geared toward 4-H youth ages 12-18 who are participating in advanced disciplines. Participants will choose one of the following: Advanced Shotgun (Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays), National Archery (Field, 3D, and FITA), and National Rifle (CMP, NRA 3P, and Silhouettes). Parents and coaches are welcome to attend but it is not mandatory. The cost will be $100 per youth/per parent/per coach. Deadline to pay is November 1st.


Ag Photography Contest

Grab your camera and get to shootin’! Deadline is November 11th.

Rules and regulations:

  • All photos must relate to agriculture.
  • Photos must be taken by individual listed on the entry label (get a label from your leader).
  • Entry label must include name, parish, grade, and category.
  • Photos entered must have been taken during 2022 and in Louisiana.
  • All entries must be 8"x10" (color or black and white), no other sizes will be accepted.
  • Each photo must include a one-line title.
  • You are limited to entering only one photo in each of the categories listed.
  • Entries cannot be duplicated.
  • Ink jet prints acceptable.

Categories:

  1. Farm Animals
  2. Horticulture (flowers & gardens), Plants, or Crops
  3. Any Other Agriculture (like farm machinery, barns, silos, hen houses, etc.)

4-H Fashion Camp

“Spice it Up with 4-H Fashion Camp” is the theme for the 2023 Fashion Camp to be held at Camp Grant Walker.

  • January 20-22, 2023
  • Saturday 9 a.m. - Sunday 11 a.m.
  • Campers eligible aged 10-13 years old
  • Alternate waiting list will be kept, first come - first served!
  • Friday night accommodations available
  • Adult volunteer must have completed 4-H Overnight Chaperone Program
