Overall Advisory Leadership Council Meeting Minutes, December 2023

The East Carroll Parish Office of LSU and Southern University AgCenters held an Overall Advisory Leadership Council meeting on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 12 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana.

21 were in attendance, including the following AgCenter employees: Extension Agent/Parish Chair Lekeisha Lucas-Powell (LSU - 4-H Youth Development Program); Extension Associate Jocinda Jackson-Jones (LSU – Healthy Communities); Area Agent Carolyn Robinson (SU – Regional FCS/Nutrition Education Supervisor); Nutrition Educator Assistant Theresa Sammons (SU – FCS); and Administrative Coordinator Sherry McGaha.

Mrs. Powell introduced herself, thanked everyone for coming, and gave a brief description of our program areas. She stated the purpose of the meeting is to identify the critical needs of the community and the best way do that is to meet with stakeholders.

Mrs. Powell asked all AgCenter employees to introduce themselves. She then instructed everyone to grab a lunch plate and proceed to the breakout portion of the meeting.

The main topics discussed by each group were:

Healthy Communities

1. Physical Activity

  • Physical activity in schools - implement a schedule or activity to go to Kendall's Park
  • Implement more physical activity challenges on social media

2. Healthy retail choices

Update on Kendall's Park and the StoryWalk

A Walk Audit was completed with youth in the community to gather information which was used to implement getting playground equipment valued at $40,000 for Kendall’s Park. The equipment has been installed. The safety material will be installed soon and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held.

The StoryWalk signs have been installed along the sidewalks around the library to promote physical activity and literacy – read while you walk.

FCS

  1. Voter registration and the importance of voting
  2. Financial management and banking
  3. Cooking demos - Back to Basics - How to cook a pot of beans, greens, etc.
  4. Vitamins, minerals, supplements
  5. Adult and prep classes
  6. Continue CHEF Camp
  7. Job interview preparation, appropriate dress, resume preparation
  8. CPR (ambulance station)

FCS will hold a health fair March 5, 2024.

ANR

More research/demonstrations on things such as:

  • Irrigation - programs to help make irrigation more efficient, etc.
  • Variety data; variety selection
  • Tap root decline
  • Drone use
  • Soil health
  • Nutrient management

Mrs. Powell again thanked everyone for coming and the meeting was adjourned.
