Getting Enough Whole Grains

MyPlate says that you need at least 3 ounces of whole grains every day.

What is considered an ounce?

  • A slice of whole-wheat bread or one small bagel
  • 1 small whole-wheat roll
  • ½ cup of cooked grains such as brown rice, corn, or oatmeal
  • 1 cup of cold cereal or granola bar or mixed trail mix
  • 5 whole-grain crackers or wheat crackers
  • 3 cups of popcorn (low salt)

We eat whole grains to feel fuller faster and to be healthier because whole grains provide our bodies with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and Phytonutrients.

Trail Mix

Ingredients:

4 cups of your favorite whole-grain cereal like Cheerios

4 cups of plain granola

2 cups peanuts or almonds

2 cups raisins

Instructions:

Dump all the ingredients into a giant bowl and mix together with clean hands. Divide trail mix into small plastic bags or store in airtight containers. This is just delicious. It is a mix of crunchy and soft, salty, and sweet, with some healthy stuff and proteins, too.
