FCS Nutrition Advisory Board Minutes

St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist Parish Library, LaPlace

Present: Patti Rodrigue, Laureen Arceneaux, Mary Richard, Artis Williams, Joe Carr, Jerry Carter, Anne Baudier, Chiquita Briley and Cynthia Clifton.

Cynthia Clifton welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending the FCS Nutrition Advisory Board meeting.

Opening prayer was led by Patti Rodrigue.

Minutes from the June 14, 2017 meeting was handed out and read. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Patti Rodrigue and seconded by Laureen Arceneaux. Motion Passed

New Business:

Macy Richard with the South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority reported the following upcoming events: Marathon Petroleum is having their Health Fair on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 and Children’s Health Fair. She also talked about the IRT – Interactive Response Technology event that was held at the East St. John High School for two weeks during the summer of 2017. This health fair was free and opened to the public. Military was also involved in the event.

The parish was distributing flu shots at the St. John Parish Health Unit in January. Because of the seriousness of the flu this year, everyone is being asked to get the flu shot, especially young children and senior citizens.

Jerry Carter Representative for Region 3 Community Coalition reported that Terrebonne is the lowest in the State in health issues. He also stated that not many communities participate in awareness or wellness programs offered in communities.

Cynthia Clifton with the LSU AgCenter in St. John the Baptist Parish reported that she is teaching a Dining with Diabetes series at the Garyville Library on Monday nights from 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. These classes are free and open to the public, however, not many participants are showing up for the classes. The class started with 2 participants and now there is 8 that are attending. Macy Richard, Jerry Carter and Anne Baudier asked Cynthia Clifton to send the flyer to them and they would distribute to their clientele in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Jerry Carter asked if St. John the Baptist Parish was a Smoke Free parish. He was instructed that he needs to talk to Parish Government to see if this is something that they already have or maybe interested in having in the parish. He will also ask about the Wellness program.

It was asked about the opioid in the parish. Macy Richard reported that the Behavioral Health Center presents a TV show every month on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. on Bayou TV that talks about the Opioid problem in the parish.

The Louisiana Federal Credit Union are offering the following workshop:

February 28 Tax Strategies

Workshops will be held at the Louisiana Federal Credit Union Training Center at 406 East Airline Highway, LaPlace from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to RSVP if attending at getsmart@LouisianaFCU.org or call 985-653-1736.

Also offered by the Louisiana Federal Credit Union:

April 8 (Deadline) Ronald E. Thomas Scholarship (All high school seniors)

Requirements:

One high school senior will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

To apply:

You must be a high school senior graduating in 2018

You must be a member of Louisiana FCU or eligible for membership

All entries must be received by April 8. The winner will be chosen and notified by April 30. APPLY TODAY

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 9, 2018.
