In 2020, the Louisiana 4-H Program was able to offer 4-H University in a virtual format to more than 600 youth. The experience allowed the 4-H program to gain some valuable insight into managing virtual contests as well as gauging the engagement of our youth. Using the lessons learned in 2020, and the current state of Louisiana and restrictions 4-H can announce that 2021 4-H University will offer a limited, but diverse, slate of contests which will be conducted in the formats of virtual, face-to-face, or virtual/face-to-face. These plans are being announced in relation to Louisiana’s current phase 3 status. Due to the complexity of the event and the need for parishes and agents to plan accordingly, the 4-H Program will proceed with these announced plans regardless of any/all restrictions being lifted by June.

Due to current restrictions which limited our parishes from transporting youth and housing large number of youths in dorms/hotels, the need for parents and volunteers to provide transportation, similar to that of our livestock shows and shooting sports, will be vital for our parish’s participation.

The contests listed are ones that have been reviewed and decided upon by the 4-H University advisory committee, the 4-H faculty, contests superintendents, and 4-H leadership. Some of the contests will be modified this year to provide diversity in our contests offerings for all youth interested in participating. We are commitment to making these contests as fair as possible for our 4-Her’s.

Highlights for the 2021 4-H University Event:

  • The overall event is structured as a “come and go” event due to COVID-19 transportation and lodging restrictions. Contestants will be allowed to travel in on their contest day and leave after the completion of the presentation/contest.
  • 4-H University registration has been moved up to May 21, 2021 for contest numbers to be evaluated so contestants may be scheduled according to occupancy limits at the various facilities.
  • Face-to-Face Contests will be held at LSU in Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Evacuation Center, City of Alexandria, Camp Grant Walker, and the Rapides Parish Office. Please make sure you stay up to date on the schedule and location of contests. Transportation will be the responsibility of the participant.
  • On Thursday night of 4-H University week, a virtual celebration program will take place to announce the new leadership boards, recognition of our scholarship winners, and to honor our Hall of Fame Honorees.
  • June 30th a 4-H University Awards Night will be hosted to virtually announce the winners from the 2021 4-H University.

It is our goal to provide another great and unique experience for our youth in 2021. During the Facing the Future Conference, the administrative section will update everyone on the latest news related to the 2021 4-H University. The 2021 4-H University information and schedule are attached below.
