The general 4-H enrollment fee for 2023-2024 is $7. Note: If a club is available at your school, follow the school club leader’s enrollment guidelines. Name the Newsletter Contest

The monthly Ouachita 4-H Newsletter needs a new name for the 2023-2024 school year. If you are in a club at your school, please turn in your ideas for a newsletter name to your 4-H Leader. If you are a Member-At-Large, meaning you are not part of a school club, please email your entries to rmiller@agcenter.lsu.edu. All entries are due by Friday, October 13, 2023. The winner will receive $20.00. Limit one entry per 4-H'er. Limit your newsletter name to 5 words or less. Put your name & school on your entries. Last year, our newsletter was named "The Clover Chronicles".

Learning Garden Groundbreaking

Join us Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at 517 Marion Street in Monroe as we hear about the Farm to School program, healthy eating habits, the HYPE project, pollinators, & assemble the new raised garden beds! The Learning Garden aims to create a vibrant environment where students can directly experience the joys & benefits of growing their own food, while also gaining insights into the broader concepts of agriculture, nutrition, & environmental stewardship. The garden provides a space where students from elementary, middle, & high school levels can engage in experiential learning that transcends the confines of traditional classrooms.

Photography Club

Camera. The Ouachita 4-H Photography Club, led by Mayor Staci Albritton Mitchell, serves as an important contribution giving youth, ages 9-19, opportunities to learn more about the different aspects of photography. The cost to join the Photography Club is $20. The deadline for 2023-2024 is November 1, 2023. Checks should be made payable to Ouachita 4-H. Please send payments to 704 Cypress Street, West Monroe, LA71291. Please send all payments directly to our office by mailing or dropping off to our office. We also have a drop box in the front of our building.

The September Photography Club meeting is scheduled for 5:30-7:00 p.m., Monday, September 18 at Black Bayou Wildlife Refuge, 480 Richland Road, Monroe, LA. The meeting place will be in the Educational Building. Youth will learn about Composition, Focal Point, Rule of Thirds, & Leading Lines! The Ouachita 4-H Photography club works to grow our youth in a variety of ways, while providing diverse, hands-on experiences. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year! The dates for the Fall Paper Clover 2023 Campaign are October 4-15, 2023. During that time, head out to your local Tractor Supply store, located at 201 Mane Street in West Monroe, & buy a paper clover to help support your parish 4-H program!

If you are interested in showing rabbits, poultry, swine, cows, horses… then our Livestock Program is for you! For more information, contact Tara Garlington or Bethany Corona at 323-2251. The NELA District Livestock Show will be held January 31 – February 3, 2024 in Delhi, Louisiana.

Shooting Sports

Louisiana Shooting Sports Logo.If you are 9 years or older & like shooting guns or bows, then our Shooting Sports Club is for you! Ouachita 4-H offers Archery, Rifle, Shotgun, & Pistol (pistol is reserved for returning shooter age 14 & up). The cost to become a shooting sports member is $15 per youth; the maximum amount per family is $25 (in addition to 4-H annual dues which are $7). You must enroll in 4-H & pay membership dues to join Shooting Sports. For more information about enrolling, email bcorona@agcenter.lsu.edu or come to our New Shooters Meeting on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. in the 4-H Auditorium, 704 Cypress Street, West Monroe, LA.

Enrollment for new shooters opens October 1 but can be done at the New Shooters Meeting. To sign up when enrolling in the 4-H Online enrollment system, select Shooting Sports Club after you have selected the correct school club as primary. From there you may choose your discipline(s). The deadline to enroll in Ouachita 4-H Shooting Sports will be November 1, 2023.

The 2023 Ark-La-Miss Fair will be held September 28-October 8, 2023 at the Monroe Civic Center! Come on 4-H'ers & show off your talents to our community! There are several projects available - from photography, baking, canning, to arts & crafts, & more. Entry forms & handbooks are available at our office (704 Cypress Street, West Monroe). National 4-H Week

National 4-H Week.National 4-H Week is October 1 – 7, 2023! National 4-H Week, the first full week of October, is a week-long celebration of 4-H across the country. During National 4-H Week, promote 4-H in your school & community with fun activities. Some ideas include providing refreshments for school staff, placing 4-H signs on lockers of members, placing posters throughout the school, & having a 4-H member read a PSA each morning!

Summer Camp sign.What’s a good theme for 2024 4-H Summer Camp? Send us your most creative ideas for a slogan - in (7) words or less. Illustrations must accompany the phrase & will be part of the contest. The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief & “catchy,” capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The artwork & slogan may be used in its entirety or used as the concept for the final artwork. Logo & slogan will be on all publicity for camp & the camp T-shirt, & the winner will receive a monetary award. Submissions must also include the following: full name & age of person submitting the slogan; parish/4-H club; complete mailing address; & telephone number. Submit your entries to the 4-H office or via email to: rmiller@agcenter.lsu.edu. Think fast! – the deadline for submitting 4-H Summer Camp & Lost Camp entries is Monday, October 23, 2023. Make sure to indicate which entries are for 4-H Summer Camp & which entries are for Lost Camp.
