4-H Pledge

I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

Ark-La-Miss Fair

The 2022 Ark-La-Miss Fair will be held September 30-October 9, 2022 at the Monroe Civic Center! Come on 4-H'ers & show off your talents to our community! There are several projects available - from photography, baking, canning, to arts & crafts, & more. Entry forms & handbooks are available at our office (704 Cypress Street, West Monroe). Camp Culinary

2022 Camp Culinary will take place November 21-22, 2022 at Camp Grant Walker. This program is open to all youth between 9-13 years old, with no 4-H membership required. Camp Culinary will feature an introduction to the rich cultural history of Cajun Cuisine. The fee will be $150 to attend & space is limited to 30 participants! Youth will need to be dropped off by a parent/guardian or another approved adult, who can be indicated on the registration form. There is no cost for parent chaperones/adult volunteers. Registration is now open, & will close on November 4. Please note that all Health Forms & Program Fees are due on November 4. Camp Grant Walker Theme Contest

The decision was made to re-highlight the winning Camp Catch Phrase from 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic & its associated impacts negated the proper exposure this winning youth deserves. Therefore, the 2023 4-H Summer Camp Catch Phrase Winner is – Jace Cortez, a former 6th grader at Sixth Ward Elementary School, in St. James Parish, for his 4-H Summer Camp Catchphrase “Get Hooked on 4-H Camp”. The winning catchphrase will be on all camp marketing materials & summer camp T-shirt.

Community Service

4-H will assist at Fall Family Night, sponsored by Ouachita Green & Ouachita Valley Federal Credit Union, from 4:00-9:00 p.m. October 29, 2022 at Kiroli Park in West Monroe. To register as a 4-H Volunteer, please email youth name, grade, school, parent name, & parent cell to tgarlington@agcenter.lsu.edu by October 14.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to two of our Junior Leaders, Anna Agan & Ethan Atkins for making the Northeast Regional Leader Board! And also, Congratulations to Lexi Harper for placing 1st in the 7th Grade Category in the State Records Contest!

Don’t Forget to Recycle!

Fashion Camp

“Spice It Up!…With 4-H Fashion” is the theme of 4-H Fashion Camp scheduled for January 20-22, 2023 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. Ouachita will be able to send two campers (10-13 Years old) & one adult leader (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.). An adult volunteer leader is required. Due to limited space, Fashion Camp participation will be limited to 24 4-H’ers (18 adults), accepted on a first-come, first served basis with paid registration fee & all completed forms as well as online registration.

Costs:

  • Arriving Friday night - $200
  • Arriving Saturday morning - $175
  • Volunteer Leaders - $80 (Adult leaders attending with parish campers)
  • Fashion Board Members & Leaders - $40

Forms & payments are due to the Ouachita 4-H Office by Monday, November 14. Contact Tara Garlington at (318) 323-2251 if interested in attending.

HYPE: Healthy Young People Empowerment Coalition

The HYPE Kick-Off Event will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m., October 14, 2022 at Saul Adler Recreation Center in Monroe. “Come learn how you can be part of our coalition!” We will have food, fun, giveaways, & games! It is open to youth ages 12-17 who would like to make a difference in our community. For more information, call 323-2251.

Jr. Leaders

The Ouachita 4-H Jr. Leader Club is open to 4-H’ers in grades 7-12. Jr. Leaders provide assistance with 4-H events, camps, community service, service-learning projects, & more! To sign-up please be sure to select Jr. Leader Club when enrolling in the 4-H online enrollment system (in addition to your primary club). The Jr. Leader sign-up deadline is October 28, 2022. Kickball

“Spookball” is here! NELA 4-H is finalizing plans for a kickball tournament to be held October 31, 2022 at the Tim McGraw Sports Complex, Gin Road in Rayville! Right now, we are hoping to start at 9:00 a.m. Details will follow soon. The tournament is open to 4-H members in grades 6-8 in the following parishes: Caldwell, Catahoula, Concordia, East Carroll, Franklin, Madison, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland, Tensas, Union, & West Carroll. Not enrolled in 4-H? Contact us at 323-2251 to sign-up!

Community Service Project: with Care & Share of Rayville. Bring 2 items for entry. Needed items are: spaghetti noodles, pasta, grits, peanut butter, canned vegetables

  • Healthy living, citizenship, leadership, & fun-filled educational activities all in one day!
  • Invite your family & friends to support you!
  • Concessions will be available
  • If you have an interested middle-schooler, please email your child’s name, grade, school, parent name & parent cell to tgarlington@agcenter.lsu.edu by Oct. 10, 2022.
  • School excuses will be sent for our participants for this fun-filled day of healthy living, citizenship, & more!!

Livestock

If you are interested in exhibiting show animals at the upcoming 2022-2023 NELA District Livestock Shows, contact our office at 323-2251. There are possession dates for these shows that you must meet in order for your animal to be eligible to show. The NELA District Show will be held February 1-4, 2023 in Delhi, LA.

Mental Health Awareness

The 2022-2023 club programming focus is Mental Health Awareness.

Name the Newsletter Contest

The monthly Ouachita 4-H Newsletter needs a new name for the 2022-2023 school year. If you are in a club at your school, please turn in your ideas for a newsletter name to your 4-H Leader. If you are a Member-At-Large, meaning you are not part of a school club, please email your entries to rmiller@agcenter.lsu.edu. All entries are due by Friday, October 14, 2022. The winner will receive $20.00. Limit one entry per 4-H’er. Limit your newsletter name to 5 words or less. Put your name & school on your entries. Last year, our newsletter was named “Clover Connect”.

National 4-H Week

National 4-H Week for 2022 will be held October 2 – 8!

National 4-H Week, the first full week of October, is a week-long celebration of 4-H across the country. During National 4-H Week, promote 4-H in your school & community with fun activities. Some ideas include providing refreshments for school staff, placing 4-H signs on lockers of members, placing posters throughout the school, and having a 4-H member read a PSA each morning!

Night with the Pelicans

Save the date!! 4-H Night with the Pelicans will be on Friday, January 6, 2023, against the Brooklyn Nets. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. The ticket prices are:

  • Balcony End: $20
  • Balcony side: $25
  • Lower End: $60
  • Parking: $10 & $25 (bus)

Ticket prices include a t-shirt. Additional information will be available soon.

Paper Clover

Tractor Supply began their partnership with 4-H in 2010 & they have since helped raise over $14 million through their Paper Clover fundraisers. The success of these campaigns has impacted over 69,000 students by providing them with hands-on learning experiences through projects in STEM, agriculture, healthy living, & civic engagement. 100% of funds raised through their two Paper Clover fundraisers directly benefit 4-H & the kids & teens they work with - 90% of donations directly support 4-H youth in the state it was raised, & the remaining 10% supports national 4-H programming.

The dates for the Fall Paper Clover 2022 Campaign are October 5-16, 2022. During that time, head out to your local Tractor Supply store, located at 201 Mane Street in West Monroe, & buy a paper clover to help support your parish 4-H program!

Pet Workshop

Come join us from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 13, 2022 in the 4-H Auditorium (704 Cypress Street, West Monroe) to learn about pet care, animal shelters, fostering, & more! No cost to register. Open to youth ages 9-19. To register: email youth name, grade, school, parent name & parent cell to tgarlington@agcenter.lsu.edu by October 10, 2022.

Photography Club

Are you interested in learning how to take better pictures? Have you ever wondered how photographers capture those images? You will have a chance to have those questions & more answered in the Ouachita 4-H Photography Club! Mayor Staci Albritton Mitchell is geared up to provide fun & interactive lessons! Our Photography Club is open to all 4-H’ers! There is a one-time $10 fee to join. To sign-up please be sure to select Photography Club when enrolling in the 4-H online enrollment system. The October Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 13, 2022 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. We will meet at Indian Village Harvest Farm, 1976 Guyton Swamp Road, Calhoun, LA.

  • Parents may drop off & pick up youth
  • Meeting Place – we will meet in the front building where the produce is sold
  • Youth may bring money to purchase a pumpkin & ice cream – approximately $10
  • Note: If you are entering photos in the State Fair, they are due Oct. 13

Shooting Sports

If you are 9 years or older & like shooting guns or bows, then our Shooting Sports Club is for you! Ouachita 4-H offers Archery, Rifle, Shotgun, & Pistol (pistol is reserved for 4-H’ers age 14 & up & space is limited for pistol). The cost to become a shooting sports member is $15 per youth; the maximum amount per family is $25 (in addition to 4-H annual dues which are $7). You must enroll in 4-H & pay membership dues to join Shooting Sports. For more information, please visit our Facebook page, “Ouachita 4-H”. The Shooting Sports enrollment deadline for 2022-2023 is November 15, 2022.

  • A New Shooters’ Meeting for our new families interested in the Ouachita 4-H Shooting Sports Program will be held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 in the 4-H Auditorium, 704 Cypress Street, West Monroe, LA.
  • A Round Robin will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2022 at the OPSO Range, 357 Fewell Road, West Monroe. The Round Robin gives youth the opportunity to try out Archery, Rifle, & Shotgun! (Pistol will not be part of the Round Robin) Instructors & coordinators will be available to give information & answer questions. Important Note: Youth Must be completely registered as a Shooting Sports Member before attending the Round Robin. A parent/guardian must attend with youth.

Shooting Sports Camp

The Shooting Sports Camp will be held December 16-18, 2022 in Pollock at Grant Walker Educational Facility. The camp is open for 4-H Youth ages 9-13 years old. Participants will choose one of the following:Archery, Shotgun, .22 Rifle or Air Pistol/Air Rifle/BB Gun (Combined).Parents & coaches are welcome to attend but it is not mandatory. 4-H Online Registration should be out soon! Look for updates on our Facebook page!
