- LSU AgCenter to host horticulture forum April 3 in Winnsboro
(03/07/19) WINNSBORO, La. — The LSU AgCenter will host a spring horticulture forum April 3 at the Tom H. Scott Research and Extension Educational Center in Winnsboro.
This event is part of an expanded outreach in the region to offer enhanced learning opportunities for small horticulture crop producers, home gardeners and landscaping enthusiasts, said AgCenter regional director Melissa Cater.
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. with presentations beginning at 9. Lunch will be provided. Admission is $10 per person.
LSU AgCenter experts will cover a variety of topics related to gardening and landscapes — from how to grow native shrubs to spring plant diseases and integrated pest management.
Retired AgCenter horticulturist Allen Owings will discuss landscaping highlights and AgCenter vegetable specialist Kiki Fontenot will share recommended practices for north Louisiana vegetable production. Other presentations will include fruit tree management and soil amendments for the garden and landscape.
A tour of the grounds of the Scott Center will feature plans for upcoming horticulture projects highlighting Louisiana Super Plants, weed management, and vegetable and fruit production.
“The new demonstration beds will be a useful, hands-on addition to our existing programs,” Cater said.
