LSU Dairy Science Club presents awards

(05/01/17) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Dairy Science Club honored a dairy farmer, a retired professor and outstanding students during its annual banquet held at the Lod Cook Alumni Center on April 29.

The club recognized Kenneth Gill, a dairy producer in Washington Parish, as Dairyman of the Year. Gill joined his father in the dairy business in 1975 and incorporated Circle G Farms. The farm has 160 cows and 150 replacement heifers.


Gill and his family support 4-H dairy programs. He is a member of the Louisiana Dairy Promotion Board, Louisiana Holstein Association Board, Washington Parish Dairy Advisory Board and the Washington Parish Farm Bureau Board.

Bruce Jenny, retired LSU professor of dairy science, received the club’s Honorary Lifetime Membership award. Jenny came to LSU in 1991 as a professor and head of the Department of Dairy Science, which merged with the Department of Animal Sciences in 2006 to form the School of Animal Sciences. Jenny, who served as an adviser to the Dairy Science Club, retired from LSU in January, 2017.

Jenny was a member of the faculty at Clemson University for 18 years before coming to LSU.

Four students received departmental scholarships. Dana Bryant, of Forest, Virginia, received the T.E. Patrick Scholarship. Casey Anderson, of New Boston, New Hampshire, received the V. Fred Ledford Scholarship. Christian Arias, of Franklin, Louisiana, received the Professor Charles Henry Staples Scholarship. Brian Norton, of Geismar, Louisiana, received the B.J. Burch Scholarship.

Club awards went to Trent Dugas, of St. Martinville, Outstanding Senior Member; Casey Kenny, of Walden, New York, Outstanding Club Member and Member with Highest Scholastic Average; and Luke Williams, of Baton Rouge, Outstanding New Member.
