(04/11/17) TALLULAH, La. – Tallulah has been selected to participate in Local Foods, Local Places, a technical assistance program of the Environmental Protection Agency Smart Growth initiative that will bring health and community development experts to the northeast Louisiana town on April 19 and 20.
Tallulah is the seat of Madison Parish, which is one of four parishes that are part of the LSU AgCenter-led Healthy Communities initiative and have received grant funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The other parishes are St. Helena, Tensas and West Feliciana.
The Local Foods, Local Places program will complement AgCenter efforts in Madison Parish, said Elisabeth Altazan, Healthy Communities program manager.
“The program is highly competitive and brings in national consultants to deliver assistance in making an action plan for towns to use local foods as an economic driver,” Altazan said.
Local Foods, Local Places is led by a steering committee that includes representatives from the Tallulah city government, Doug’s Market, the LSU and Southern University agricultural centers and the Madison Voluntary Council on Aging.
A community meeting will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on April 19. A full-day planning session will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 20.
Both meetings will be held at the Madison Parish cooperative extension office, 114 N. Cedar St. in Tallulah.
Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by contacting AgCenter agent Victoria McDonald at 337-739-9191 or vmcdonald@agcenter.lsu.edu.
