- Ottea receives distinguished teaching award, students recognized at conference
(04/06/17) BATON ROUGE, La. – James Ottea received the distinguished achievement in teaching award from the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America at its meeting in Memphis on March 12-15. Ottea is a professor of entomology with the LSU College of Agriculture and a research scientist in the LSU AgCenter.
Ottea teaches several courses, including the general education undergraduate course, Science and Society; an honors course, Science for Citizens; and Insecticide Toxicology for graduate students.
He received his master’s degree from Texas A&M University and his doctorate from the University of California, Davis. Ottea began his career at Cornell University and has been with LSU since 1990.
“It’s a wonderful honor, and I’m grateful to the ESA for the recognition and to our department head, Mike Stout, for the nomination,” Ottea said.
Blake Wilson, a former doctoral student who was recently hired as a field crop entomologist with the LSU AgCenter, received the Henry Comstock Award for an outstanding Ph.D. student. Wilson’s research focused on the development of pheromone trapping strategies for monitoring and managing the Mexican rice borer.
Other LSU students receiving awards were: Devika Bhalerao, first place in master’s oral competition; James Villegas, first place in master’s poster competition; Lina Bernaola, second place in Ph.D. oral competition; and Anup Bastola, second place in Ph.D. poster competition.
