(02/13/17) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU AgCenter LaHouse Home and Landscape Resource Center will offer a Lead Certified Renovator training course on Feb. 23.
Participants will hear presentations and take a certification exam on lead-safe work practices that contractors must use if they work in pre-1978 homes or child-occupied facilities.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule requires contractors to renew their certification every five years. The EPA has announced a one-year extension for those certified between April 1, 2010, and March 31, 2011.
Even very low levels of lead in children can lead to learning and behavior disorders, impaired hearing and other developmental health effects without any symptoms of poisoning, said AgCenter extension housing specialist Claudette Reichel.
“The most important reason to use lead-safe work practices is to protect children and workers from the serious health hazards of lead,” Reichel said. “In addition, non-compliance with RRP puts the contractor at risk of substantial EPA penalties and liability in the event of lead poisoning.”
Registration for the class is $200 and includes a booklet, hands-on activities and exam. Participants who pass the exam will receive official EPA certificates from EnviroEd, a national EPA-accredited training provider.
The class qualifies for Louisiana residential contractor continuing education credits.
