Phil Elzer named director of LSU School of Animal Sciences

(02/10/17) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU AgCenter and LSU College of Agriculture have named Phil Elzer director of the School of Animal Sciences.

Elzer is a professor of veterinary science and veterinary immunology who has been conducting brucellosis research at the AgCenter for more than 22 years.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, and a master’s degree and doctorate in veterinary immunology from Cornell University. He achieved tenure and the rank of associate professor in 1999 and became a full professor in 2004.

In 2010, Elzer was named interim head of the Department of Veterinary Science. In January 2012, he became assistant vice chancellor in the AgCenter and assistant director of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station.

Since April 2013, Elzer has served as the associate vice president of animal programs and natural resources and since November 2015 as interim director of the School of Animal Sciences.

“It is an honor to be asked to serve as the School of Animal Sciences director by the faculty and LSU AgCenter and College of Ag Administration,” Elzer said.

The School of Animal Sciences has 440 undergraduate students – the most of any department in the College of Agriculture. Additionally, 28 faculty and staff support research, teaching and outreach programs.

“The school’s in the process of overhauling the curriculum in order to better prepare students for the workforce,” Elzer said. “We owe it to them – and to future of the animal industry – to lay a strong educational foundation so they can succeed in their careers.”

The school’s goal is that no student graduates without an understanding of key areas such as animal nutrition, judging, genetics and reproduction.

Another focus for the school is to be recognized as one of the premier programs in the country, with a robust curriculum, research programs and external funding.

Elzer will continue in his role as associate vice president. The School of Animal Sciences appointment is effective immediately.
