Food safety workshops set for March in Baton Rouge, April in New Orleans

(01/23/17) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU AgCenter will offer two workshops to help educate produce growers and others in the industry about food safety practices and regulations.

The first workshop, “Preventive Controls for Human Foods,” will be held March 8-10 in Efferson Hall on the LSU campus. The curriculum, developed by the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance, meets the Food and Drug Administration requirements for becoming a preventive controls-qualified individual.

The second workshop is designed to train people who work with fruit and vegetable growers and want to become a certified produce safety trainer. It will be held April 17-18 at the New Orleans Convention Center.

Both workshops are made possible by FDA grant funding the AgCenter received to educate the produce industry about the Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule. Large farms must comply with the rule by January 2018, while small farms will have additional time to comply.

More information and instructions for registration can be found at https://www.lsu.edu/departments/nfs/. Questions about the course content should be directed to AgCenter food safety specialist Achyut Adhikari at 225-578-2529 or ACAdhikari@agcenter.lsu.edu.
