Rose workshop set for Feb. 10-11 in Gonzales, La.

(01/04/17) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU AgCenter and the Gulf District of the American Rose Society will present a midwinter workshop on rose care on Feb. 10-11 at the Clarion Inn Conference Center and Hotel in Gonzales, Louisiana.

The program is open to members of the American Rose Society, Master Gardeners, home gardeners and others interested in roses, said AgCenter horticulturist Allen Owings.

Louisiana and Mississippi rose society presidents and Gulf District board members will meet the afternoon of Feb. 10.

A buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Friday will include a presentation, “Ramblings of a Southern Gardener,” by Mississippi State University horticulturist Gary Bachman.

The Saturday program will begin at 8:30 a.m. with talks on several topics followed by a luncheon that will feature American Rose Society Gulf District award presentations. The program will end at 3:15 p.m.

Jim DelPrince, a noted floral designer from Mississippi State University, will be the keynote speaker on Saturday. Other speakers will include:

– Pat Shanley, American Rose Society president.

– Baxter Williams, American Rose Society regional director.

– Teresa Byington, garden blogger.

– Sue Sanchez, of the New Orleans Rose Society.

– Linda Aguzin, of the Acadiana Rose Society.

– Marilyn Wellan, Central Louisiana Rose Society member and past ARS president.

– Sue Burke, of the Southwest Louisiana Rose Society.

– Don Adlong, of the Central Arkansas Rose Society.

– Peggy Martin, of the New Orleans Old Garden Rose Society.

– Kristopher Kelley, of the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

The program will include a silent auction. New roses from K & M Rose Nursery in Buckatunna, Mississippi, will be available for purchase.

Registration for the workshop is open until Feb. 1. The cost, which covers both the Friday night dinner and Saturday program, is $70. Saturday-only registration is $40.

A block of rooms will be available for workshop attendees at the hotel. Mention “Gulf District” to get a discounted rate of $90 per night.
