(10/28/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU College of Agriculture has awarded more than $120,000 in scholarships to 90 students for the 2016-2017 school year. Students receiving scholarships and donors who helped fund them were invited to attend the college Honors Convocations held on Oct. 22 at the Club at Union Square on the LSU campus.
The award ceremony was the final event for the college Ag Week.
Savannah Morales, a senior from Bayou Sorrel studying natural resources ecology and management, had the opportunity to meet J.H. Martin, who represents Greater Baton Rouge State Fair. Morales is the recipient of the George Simoneaux Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Scholarship.
She spoke to Martin about her interest in wetland sciences and growing up in a small fishing village. He told her about the man for whom her scholarship is named – George Simoneaux, a former LSU AgCenter county agent, who was involved in the state fair.
Morales also spoke about how much the scholarship meant to her.
“This helps to cover costs, and the loan I had to take out wasn’t as large. So it’s less stress on me,” Morales said.
Emily Munch, a freshman from Metairie majoring in animal sciences, received the Alice and William Calloway Scholarship. She met the Calloways for the first time at the ceremony.
William Calloway is a senior public health veterinarian for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Calloways were delighted to meet Munch, who plans to study veterinary medicine.
“This is awesome. She wants to be a vet,” Alice Calloway said. “We didn’t get to pick her, but this is the right choice.”
“This is our chance to celebrate the accomplishments of these wonderful students,” said Leslie Blanchard, assistant dean of the College of Agriculture.
