Workshops for agriculture lenders, crop suppliers set for October

(09/13/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – A series of workshops will be held in October to help agricultural lenders and crop suppliers learn more about the difficult financial times many farmers are facing because of low commodity prices.

Workshops will be held on Oct. 11 in Crowley, Oct. 13 in Alexandria and Oct. 18 in West Monroe. They are a joint effort of the LSU AgCenter, Southern University Ag Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, Risk Management Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Presentations will cover several topics, including FSA and NRCS programs, crop insurance options, risk management and marketing.

Market prices for many commodities have decreased while input costs have risen, said AgCenter economist Kurt Guidry. It is important that lenders and others are able to help farmers make well-informed decisions regarding commodity and conservation programs and credit sources, he said.

Those interested in attending should register at http://www.LSUAgCenter.com/AgLenderWorkshop. Registration requires a $25 fee, which includes lunch and a binder containing presentations and resource materials. The workshops will start at 9 a.m. and end after lunch at about 1 p.m.
