Louisiana 4-H’ers win national shooting sports championships

(7/12/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – One Louisiana individual and two state teams were crowned national champions at the annual 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships held June 26-July 30 in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The championship had 679 participants from 36 states who competed in array of disciplines, including air pistols, shotguns, rifles and archery.

Miles Sinagra, of Tangipahoa Parish, won the national championship in the air pistol silhouettes class and the air pistol slow fire. Sinagra was also a member of the Louisiana team that won the overall air pistol national championship. Other members of the team are Courtney Stephens, of Jackson Parish; Carl Stirling, of St. Mary Parish; and Mary Kate McClellan, of Franklin Parish. Bob Davis, of Jackson Parish serves as the coach.

The second Louisiana team to claim a national title was in the smallbore rifle class. Members of the team are Garrett Cooper, of St. Tammany Parish, who was also the national runner-up in the individual competition; Caroline Brakeville, of Caddo Parish; Calvin Domangue, of St. James Parish; and Jonah Finley, of Ouachita Parish. Coaches for the team are Brad Barton, of Winn Parish, and Clayton Brakeville, of Caddo Parish.

Devin Rowland, of Lincoln Parish, and Matthew Sequin, of Livingston Parish, received Tom Knapp Memorial Scholarships.

In the national overall sweepstakes, Louisiana placed third behind Missouri and Kansas.

Louisiana 4-H was well-represented at the event with many individuals and teams placing in the top 10. They were:

Air Rifle Silhouettes (individual): Cameron Braud, ninth, Ascension Parish.

Archery Recurve FITA (individual): Steven Sarvis, sixth, Bossier Parish.

Archery Recurve FITA (team): Louisiana Team, fifth.

Archery Recurve Field (individual): Steven Sarvis, second, Bossier Parish.

Archery Recurve Field (team): Louisiana Team, fifth.

Archery Recurve 3D (individual): Steven Sarvis, fourth, Bossier Parish.

Archery Recurve 3D (team): Louisiana Team, second.
