(05/04/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Dairy Science Club honored students and dairy industry professionals at its annual banquet on April 23 at the Lod Cook Alumni Center.
The club recognized Mike and Patti Brian, owners of Feliciana’s Best Creamery in Slaughter, as Louisiana Dairymen of the Year.
The Brians have been operating a dairy since they bought the family farm from Mike Brian’s parents in 2000. In 2010, they started the creamery, where they have a small herd of Jersey and Holsteins, and pasteurize and bottle their own milk.
Matt Ewing, a program manager of the Milk and Dairy Division of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, received the Honorary Lifetime Member award.
Ewing, of St. Francisville, supervises the inspection of milk plants, frozen desert plants, single-service milk container plants and bulk milk tankers. He is also responsible for certification of milk haulers, samplers and milk receivers.
Eight students received departmental and alumni scholarships:
Morgan Richard, of Elton – T.E. Patrick Scholarship.
Sarah Genest, of New Iberia – Professor Charles Henry Staples Scholarship.
Buffy Ackman, of Baton Rouge – George Reymond Memorial Scholarship.
Sarah Ainsworth, of Baton Rouge – BJ Burch Scholarship.
Katelyn Corsentino, of Denham Springs – Truett Lewis Scholarship.
Elizabeth Barron, of Lafayette – LSU Dairy Alumni Association Scholarship.
Kendall Freeman, of New Albany, Ohio – LSU Dairy Alumni Association Scholarship.
Amanda Mathias, of Inola, Oklahoma – Morgan Walker Scholarship.

Allison Sommers, of Baton Rouge – Outstanding First Year Club Member
Cobey Hendry, of Kentwood – Outstanding Club Member
Sarah Ainsworth, of Baton Rouge – Member with Highest Scholastic Average
Special recognition went to Morgan Richard, who was one of only 11 students in the country to win the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board's James H. Loper Jr. Memorial Scholarship.
