(04/22/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – Visitors will have the opportunity to sample fruits and vegetables fresh from the garden along with creations from local food companies and enjoy summer family fun at the annual Garden Fest on June 18 at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden in Baton Rouge.
From 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m., visitors will have an opportunity to take a hayride to the Botanic Gardens research area to taste tomatoes, watermelons, peppers and fruit crops and learn about the latest in new vegetables and ornamentals, according to Burden resident director Jeff Kuehny.
Visitors are invited to bring their best tomatoes from their gardens and enter them in the biggest and heaviest tomato contest.
Educational sessions will begin at 9 a.m. continue every 30 minutes until 11 a.m. The Louisiana Egg commission will prepare and serve omelets, and visitors can sample bloody marys from Mason’s Grill.
In addition, students from the Louisiana Culinary Institute will prepare samples of dishes prepared with vegetables produced at Burden as well as from local food producers. Aspiring food companies in the LSU AgCenter Food Incubator will also be offering samples of their new foods and beverages.
LSU AgCenter experts will conduct a plant health clinic and diagnose problems with plant specimens visitors bring to them.
Children’s activities include water slides (bring your swimsuits) and Trixie the Clown.
Admission to the event is $10 for adults and children 4-10 years old. Children under 4 will be admitted at no charge. The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden is located at 4560 Essen Lane at I-10.
