(04/25/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – 4-H’ers from across the state competed in the 2016 State 4-H Commodity Ambassador contests on April 19 on the LSU campus. Students from grades four through 12 participated in the chicken, egg, seafood, sugar and turkey ambassador contests, and 15 winners were chosen.
The 4-H Commodity Ambassador Program is designed for education and enhancement of 4-H Club members, according to Theresia Lavergne, LSU AgCenter poultry specialist and contests coordinator.
“The program provides an opportunity for 4-H’ers to increase their knowledge of agricultural commodities, as well as improve their verbal and written communication skills,” Lavergne said.
The 2016 state winners are:
Chicken Ambassador
Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Shelby Buroker, Vermilion Parish.
Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Andrew Fontenot, Evangeline Parish.
Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Kadan Guillory, Allen Parish.
Egg Ambassador
Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Rachel Stewart, Ascension Parish.
Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Abbie McCann, Caldwell Parish.
Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Morgan Mayeux, Avoyelles Parish.
Seafood Ambassador
Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Ellen Deshotel, Evangeline Parish.
Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Caroline Whisonant, Winn Parish.
Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Annmarie Broussard, Vermilion Parish.
Sugar Ambassador
Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Seth Mitchell, Lafourche Parish.
Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Megan Chiasson, Lafourche Parish.
Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Kristen Weimer, Lafourche Parish.
Turkey Ambassador
Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Jack Burleigh, Iberia Parish.
Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Emily Lanie, Lafayette Parish.
Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Matthew Landry, Ascension Parish.
The winners in Divisions I and II of the chicken, egg, seafood, sugar and turkey contests each won a $50 award.
The winners in Division III of the chicken, egg and turkey contests won a trip to represent Louisiana at the National 4-H Poultry & Egg Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, in November.
The winners in Division III of the seafood and sugar contests won a 4-H educational trip in July.
The sponsors of the 4-H Commodity Ambassador Programs are the Louisiana Poultry Federation, the Louisiana Egg Commission, the Louisiana Seafood and Marketing Board, the American Society of Sugarcane Technologists and the Louisiana 4-H Foundation.
