(03/15/16) BATON ROUGE, La. – Sixteen artists and photographers were honored on March 12 during a reception at the sixth annual Brush with Burden Art Exhibition at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden.
Patricia Ryan, of Baton Rouge, won first place in the art category for “Hydrangea,” and Charles Haynes, of Atlanta, Georgia, took first in photography for Cruciform Pole.
The 2016 Brush with Burden event was a juried multi-media exhibition featuring all types of art inspired by Louisiana's natural beauty under the theme “Southern Sights.”
The exhibition will be open to the public in the Steele Burden Memorial Orangerie and the Ione Burden Conference Center in the Botanic Gardens from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through Saturday, March 19, and from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 20.
Winning works then will be displayed at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge during April.
Other winners in art were: second place, “Blooming Bromeliads” by Jo-Ann Adams, of New Orleans; third place, “Fishing” by Wendy Hazey, of Prairieville, Louisiana; honorable mention, “French Quarter Workday” by Betsy Neely, of Baton Rouge. Merit awards went to “Summer” by Ralph Marino, “Just Ducky” by Claudia LeJeune, “Break in the Weather” by Charles Smith and “Pears” by SuEllen Lithgoe.
Photography winners were: second place, Memphis, TN by Alana Perino, of Oakland, California; third place, Fig Leaf with Bug, Fern and Ryegrass by Bruce Schultz, of Lafayette, Louisiana; honorable mention, The Edge of Consciousness by Mary Ann Caffery, of Baton Rouge. Merit awards went to Great Egret and Chicks by Kathy Reeves, Princess Theater by Sandee Soloway, Windswept by Ellen Case and Stormy Silo by Donna Futrell.
The event was sponsored by the Burden Horticulture Society and the Botanic Gardens. Commissions from any sales will be used to support initiatives of the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden.
