Teaching Experience
I teach Applied Plant Genomics (AGRO 7080). This graduate level course is offered in fall of each odd year. The objective of this course is to familiarize the students to the modern molecular and genomics tools, which are now routinely used in both private and public sector plant breeding programs.
Drought, salinity, and low temperature are major climate-related risks for sustainable rice production. Development of abiotic stress tolerant rice cultivars is needed to enhance food security under future climatic uncertainties. The major bottleneck to accomplish this goal is the narrow genetic base of US rice germplasm, which needs to be expanded through introgression of novel abiotic stress tolerance genes. Since indica varieties and landraces are a rich source of abiotic stress tolerance genes, we are employing these donors to widen the genetic base of the US rice germplasm. However, due to presence of many undesirable traits, precise introgression of novel genes from the tolerant donors will be needed. The objectives of our abiotic stress tolerance research project are: (a) to unravel the molecular genetic basis of the abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms; and (b) to integrate both conventional and molecular breeding approaches to develop climate resilient rice varieties. We are utilizing different mapping populations such as recombinant inbred lines (RIL) and advanced introgression lines from several cross combinations to discover and validate quantitative trait loci (QTL)/genes for various morphological and physiological attributes conferring abiotic stress tolerance. Recently, we have initiated a project in soybean in which we are exploring novel genes for salt tolerance among a large set of cultivated and wild accessions for both mapping and marker-assisted selection to develop salt tolerant soybean cultivars. Our ultimate goal is to develop and deploy molecular markers associated with abiotic stress tolerance genes/attributes in our ongoing breeding program to design improved rice and soybean varieties to minimize the impact of climate change.
We are using US red rice as a model for analyzing the molecular basis of many complex domestication traits. Red rice is a weedy form of rice characterized by high genetic flexibility and phenotypic plasticity. We are employing conventional genetics approach in conjunction with modern genomic tools to investigate the molecular basis of weedy attributes. Discovery of the molecular alteration in genes associated with these domestication related traits, such as seed dormancy, seed shattering, rapid seedling growth, competitiveness, deep root system, environmental plasticity, plant height, flowering, inflorescence and seed characteristics is critical for a thorough understanding of weed biology as well as for discovering new avenues to improve crop productivity.
Aflatoxin contamination is a recurring problem in all southeastern corn growing states where high temperatures and drought conditions are common occurrence during the grain-filling period. Aflatoxins pose serious health hazard to both animals and humans. Use of host plant resistance to develop corn hybrids is the most practical solution to minimize aflatoxin contamination. Our goal in our corn project is to elucidate the molecular basis of aflatoxin resistance mechanisms which will accelerate development of superior inbred lines and hybrids using marker-assisted selection.
